In one pass Radius 2 grinding on thick materials

Steel processors are increasingly faced with the Radius 2 rounding standard. This means that a coating of paint or zinc must be as adhesive at the corners as elsewhere on the product, so that corrosion can be prevented. Q-Fin is responding to this with the SER600. The first three machines of this model had already been sold before the Dutch company built them. Proof that there is a great need for deburring machines that can grind a Radius 2 in one pass on metal sheet parts up to 600 mm wide.

In large construction works or in the petrochemical industry, thicker laser, plasma and oxyfuel-cut products are often used that receive a galvanization or powder coating. To ensure that this coating receives optimum edge coverage, the Radius 2 standard was created. Q-Fin service engineer Erik Cox: "The rounding is such that a lacquer or zinc coating on the corners is just as adhesive as elsewhere on the product. This prevents oxidation. Corrosion always means extra maintenance costs. And it can also be dangerous because it can affect the stability of a product. Just think of bridge components that are not in sight. If corrosion is allowed to run its course there unseen for a long time, it can eventually weaken the bridge."

The collaboration between Q-Fin and LVD was clinched at Blechexpo between Carl Dewulf president and managing director LVD (left) and Anton Bax, director Q-Fin Quality Finishing Machines.

Secret is in the brushing techniques

Q-Fin took up this challenge. Not with an existing machine. It went back to the drawing board to develop and build a machine that could specifically achieve a Radius 2 on steel. Q-Fin is not the only one with such a claim, yet the Super Edge Rounder SER600 is unique. "The crux is a combination of two different brushing techniques. This allows the machine to achieve that R=2 in one pass at more than 1 m/min. Other machines can't do that. That saves a lot in production speed, while the quality is constant," Cox summarizes. The machine consists of five machining stations. The first two rows of brushes where the cut sheet metal sections pass underneath provide pressure from above. Brushes three and four work the sides. The combination provides the perfect rounding of 2 mm on thicker steel products. Less is of course possible (R=1 or R=1.5 is sufficient in many cases) but R=2 is now also a possibility.

The Q-Fin machines remain on permanent display at LVD's Experience Center in Gullegem for demonstrations.

Awarded Blechexpo Award

Thanks to these unique features, the SER600 did not miss its debut at Blechexpo in early November. The machine, which realizes a 2 mm radius on the edges of a product at a speed of 1 m/min in one pass, demonstrates a strong piece of technical ability. At least that was the verdict of the Blechexpo Awards jury. Q-Fin and the SER600 took the top spot in the surface finishing technology category. The fair was also the setting for the announcement of a new partnership. Q-Fin reported that, effective immediately, it is entering into a partnership with LVD, manufacturer of sheet metal working machines and software. The Belgian machine builder's sales representatives will now actively offer Q-Fin's deburring, rounding and finishing machines with their laser cutting machines. They will become part of the LVD package.

Collaboration with LVD

The collaboration was visible to the general public for the first time during LVD's open house in Gullegem. A Q-Fin Ultimate Set (an F1200 deburring and grinding machine for sheet metal up to 1,200 mm wide, an F200 XL for sheet metal from 10 to 200 mm wide, and a WES6000 wet-acting extractor) and two hand-held machines were placed in LVD's Experience Center. Q-Fin employees were present for explanations and demos, prior to the sales days LVD account managers were already trained in Bergeijk, the Netherlands. The Q-Fin machines will remain in the Experience Center permanently for demonstrations. They are a pilot project. If the experience is positive, the cooperation will expand beyond Belgium. "The market is ready for package deals with a laser cutting machine and a grinding machine," says LVD Benelux managing director Francis Vanneste. "Especially from customers who want to invest in an efficient cutting process, we see a demand for solutions for rounded and burr-free cutting parts. We can now fill this demand in a good way with Q-Fin's machines. We are convinced of the quality of these machines and can sell them flawlessly along with our lasers."

Innovation and collaboration

Director/owner Anton Bax of Q-Fin also welcomes the partnership: "That a major manufacturer of sheet metal working machines with an excellent name in the market and a global sales network will partner with us, presents tremendous opportunities." Innovations are highly valued at Q-Fin. Every day they are further developing their machines based on all the technical data collected. With customer demonstrations that can now be given not only in Bergeijk but also in Gullegem, the perfect solution for the customer's situation is sought together with the customer. Collaboration is thus central. "At Q-Fin we like to do things differently. With our solutions, we increase the quality and appearance of your products. In doing so, we let your people work faster and more pleasantly," concludes Bax.
