Mazak launches new series of vertical machining centers

Yamazaki Mazak has officially launched its full range of new VCN vertical machining centers. The VCN-700, designed for high-performance machining, is the flagship of a new "performance line" series from Mazak.

The impressive new VCN-700 is designed to significantly improve productivity for manufacturers engaged in both heavy and dynamic machining. As CAM developers develop machining strategies such as dynamic milling, which maintains a constant load on the spindle and cutting tool to maximize material removal, Mazak has taken into account the increasingly popular CAM cycles when developing the new VCN-700.

From the finite element method optimized base and C-frame structure to precision linear roller guides and Mazatrol SmoothG 4-axis simultaneous CNC, Mazak's experts have integrated the latest machining innovations into the design of the VCN-700.

The VCN-700 is a powerhouse with a compact footprint of 3.1 by 4.4 by 3.7 m (HxWxD) and offers a very spacious workspace with a 1500 by 700 mm table that holds parts up to 1800 kg

The combination of this large work area with a large single-sided door for easy operator and crane access makes the VCN-700 suitable for most medium to large parts produced in industry. Despite this large work area and solid base, the VCN-700 is highly maneuverable and equally suitable for small components with a powerful, high-speed 15,000 rpm 22kW 120Nm spindle that can move at an impressive speed of 42m/min over the X, Y and Z axis range of 1300 by 700 by 650mm.

As you would expect from Mazak, quality is built into every facet of the VCN-700, evidenced by such features as direct-drive servo motors and highly rigid linear roller guides on all axes. This combination provides amazing accuracy, positioning precision and industry-leading kinematics for both heavy and high-speed machining.

The high-accuracy structure is enhanced by Mazak's unique Thermal Shield compensation system for stable machining accuracy. In terms of speed, the VCN-700 has a double-arm cam-controlled automatic tool change (ATC) that enables the servo-controlled 30 tool carousel to minimize non-cutting times with its 1.3-second tool change time.

The features of the new VCN-700 are typified by the powerful, sleek and easy-to-use Mazatrol SmoothG CNC control system. Incorporating state-of-the-art hardware and software, the Mazatrol SmoothG is recognized as the fastest CNC in the world with its 540 m/min block processing speed and 60 Gb hard drive - ideal for high-capacity programs and micro-segments for free-form machining. The Smooth Machining Configuration (SMC) makes it easy to fine-tune performance for machining complex surfaces.

Easy-to-use touch-screen sliders, similar to an equalizer on audio equipment, control desired speed, accuracy and surface smoothness for individual applications such as roughing, semi-finishing and finishing. The built-in Windows 10 operating system allows SmoothG to be easily connected to networks, while MTConnect provides a standardized, open-source language for communicating with the machine. Like the construction of the machine, the SmoothG is designed to integrate with add-on automation systems and Industry 4.0 technology.

While the VCN-700 offers a plethora of impressive standard features, optional extras make this VMC a wise choice for any machine shop, regardless of industry. For manufacturers considering volume and lights-out production, the VCN-700 is available as a turnkey system with a comprehensive range of automation packages that can be integrated from the left, front or right side of the machine. Within the work area, Mazak offers solutions such as automatic tool and workpiece measurement and tool breakage detection. Tool ID is also available for automatic tool data entry and updating for networked machines.

For manufacturers requiring higher spindle speeds, an 18,000 rpm 30kW spindle is available with a range of tooling options including HSK-63A and BIG PLUS BBT with the added assurance of face and taper contact for the ultimate in rigidity, concentricity and performance. For the mold industry, small parts industries and customers with the highest demands for high-quality surface finish, the new 60,000 or 80,000 rpm Mazak Ultraspindle can be fully integrated and CNC-controlled.

In addition to the options for automation and spindle configuration, the VCN-700 can be chosen with a 48- or 60-position ATC, and for manufacturers requiring assurance with precision, ball screw cooling and scale feedback on X, Y and Z axes can be selected. For operator convenience, the VCN-700 can be supplied with additional work lights and a fog collector. For more flexibility and less setup work for end users, a Kitagawa GT320 4th axis unit can also be integrated into the VCN-700.

As with many models in Mazak's extensive lineup, the VCN-700 can be equipped with a variety of chip management and coolant delivery systems, including cover cooling, bed coil cooling, spindle cooling and a selection of chip removal systems.
