Leading the way in efficiency and sustainability: Tata Steel unveils future-proof decoiling line at Feijen

Feijen Heavy Gauge Europe, a specialized steel service center and subsidiary of Tata Steel Netherlands, has launched a state-of-the-art decoiling line. This investment is an important part of Tata Steel's strategic investment program and completes its fully integrated supply chain - from the IJmuiden steel plant to Feijen. The new line is designed to meet the growing demand for strong and wear-resistant steels, such as Valast® 450, which are used in sectors such as agriculture, construction machinery, cranes, heavy vehicles and yellow goods, among others.

Listening to customers: A unique decoiling line tailored to market needs

Tata Steel goes beyond simply supplying steel; it focuses on offering integrated solutions and value-added services that fully meet customer requirements. The new decoiling line at Feijen has been developed with customer feedback in mind and meets both current and future requirements. This customer-centric approach reinforces Tata Steel's commitment to a sustainable and integrated supply chain, enhancing collaboration across industries.

"We worked closely with our customers to better understand their needs and expectations for both products and services. These insights, along with the expertise of our supplier FIMI, played an important role in the design of the new line," said Jaap Jan Aardenburg, Marketing Manager at Tata Steel Netherlands.

Stig Eriksen, General Manager of Feijen Heavy Gauge Europe, adds, "Our new decoiling line is more than just an investment in new equipment. It symbolizes the completion of a fully integrated supply chain, from steel production in IJmuiden to final processing in Feijen. This allows us to process hot-rolled steel coils into sheets that meet the demands of today's market."

A masterpiece of automation and robotics: Special features of the decoiling line

The new decoiling line is equipped with the latest technologies to increase both productivity and quality. It is the most powerful line ever designed by FIMI and capable of processing ultra-high tensile strength materials. The line can handle coils up to 40 tons, with yield strengths up to 1600 N/mm², hardnesses up to UHSS grades, widths up to 2150 mm and thicknesses between 1.5 and 13 mm, at speeds up to 40 meters per minute. The products supplied by this line are characterized by excellent flatness and very close dimensional tolerances.

Automation plays a key role in the operation of the line. Key features include automatic loading, robot-assisted stripping, and automatic thickness and dimension measurements. Three advanced leveling machines provide full automation of coil feeding without the need for physical contact, ensuring operator safety. The three-step brush system with a smart extraction and filter mechanism minimizes particle emissions, contributing to the environmental friendliness of the line.

Automated surface quality measurement, using a camera and airbag stacking technology, ensures optimum precision while maintaining low noise emissions. At the core of the line is automation and robotics, guaranteeing high-speed production, real-time monitoring and full product lifecycle traceability through Industrial IoT solutions. This optimizes energy consumption, increases efficiency and enables predictive maintenance, ensuring process continuity.

The new decoiling line was developed to meet the requirements of sectors such as agriculture, construction machinery, cranes and heavy vehicles. This line allows Feijen to produce a wide range of high-quality steels precisely tailored to the specific requirements of these sectors. One of the most valued products among Tata Steel customers is Valast® 450, a highly wear-resistant steel known for its long life and consistent flatness, ideal for heavy-duty applications such as mining and earthmoving. In addition, Tata Steel offers ultra-high strength steels (UHSS), including the Ympress® range from S700 to S1100 and above, as well as Boron-Manganese steel (MnB5) for applications such as agricultural machinery.

Vision of sustainability: Towards CO2 neutrality at Feijen

In line with Tata Steel's broader vision of sustainability, Feijen announced it will be carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2 during the official opening of its decoiling line on Sept. 13. This underlines Tata Steel's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and is in line with its long-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality in all its operations. The new line thus represents the future of steel production: automated, sustainable and perfectly integrated with the IJmuiden steel plant.

"We are acting now and taking responsibility by already offering a range of green steel products from our Tata Steel IJmuiden steel mill under the Zeremis brand and making our distribution locations carbon neutral," said Jaap Jan Aardenburg. "This investment is part of Tata Steel's journey to a greener future, and we are pleased to announce that the Service Centre Maastricht, which includes the Feijen plant, is now also carbon neutral in scope 1 and 2. Our goal is to make all our sites carbon neutral by April 1, 2025."

Stig Eriksen added: The new decoiling line is an important investment that not only places us at the top of the industry in terms of automation and quality, but also supports our sustainability goals. It is an important step forward to make our operations ready for the challenges of tomorrow."
