The accuracy of machining operations depends on the quality of both the machine and the tools. Paul Horn GmbH has been developing and producing precision tools for a wide variety of applications in general industry since 1969, as well as in demanding applications such as automotive and aerospace, hydraulics and pneumatics, medical and jewelry production. High-quality technology, outstanding performance and unprecedented reliability result in a strong reputation. Continuous development and optimization of products and processes are given the highest priority. Most recent examples are the groove and parting milling system M475 and the new coatings RC2 and RC4.
Paul Horn GmbH presents a new generation of a groove and parting milling system: M475. This completely newly developed tool system enables highly cost-effective and productive milling operations. The precision ground changeover cutting plate has four cutting edges. This eliminates the need for the user to insert different cutting plates into the milling body. Horn offers the positive cutting inserts with round chip guide with the new cutting material type RC4G. This type enables high-quality machining during the milling process. The M475 system complements the existing Horn milling systems M310, 382 and 383. The special surface treatment of the milling base elements provides great protection against abrasive chips.
The basic elements are available from stock, such as disc cutters, slip-on cutters and screw-in cutters. The slip-on and groove milling variants have an internal coolant supply. The disc cutters are available with diameters from 80 mm to 200 mm. As separation and groove widths, one can choose between 5 mm, 6 mm or 8 mm. As push-on cutters, the tools are available with cutting circles from 63 mm to 200 mm. The groove widths are identical to those of the variant disc cutters. Screw-in cutters can be ordered as standard with a cutting width of 5 mm and a diameter of 40 mm to 63 mm. The effective number of teeth of all variants depends on the respective diameter. For slip-on cutters with a diameter of 40 mm, the zeff is 2, while for disk cutters of 200 mm the zeff is 13. The high number of effective cutting faces also contributes to the cost-effectiveness of the new milling system M475.
Paul Horn GmbH continuously invests in new and modern technologies. In 2015, the company CemeCon delivered the world's first of three HiPIMS systems to Horn. The High-Power-Impulse-Magnetron-Sputtering technology provides many advantages and opens up new possibilities in the coating of precision tools. The technology enables the construction of very dense and compact coatings that are very hard and at the same time tough. The coatings have a very homogeneous structure and uniform layer thickness, even with complex tool geometries. The research and development of new and existing coatings and technologies contribute significantly to the success.
HORN has an engineering team dedicated exclusively to this topic. Since the beginning of in-house coating, R&D projects have also been carried out together with plant manufacturers. With the new coatings RC2 and RC4, Paul Horn GmbH presents new developments in the field of high-quality tool coatings. The high toughness and hardness allow steel materials to be machined at high cutting speeds, significantly increasing tool life. The high temperature resistance ensures that the coatings are also suitable for dry machining, and even if insufficient coolant is supplied. Numerous tool systems are available from stock with the new HiPIMS coating. Because the coating is applied at Horn itself, short delivery times are possible even for special tools.
