Sandvik Coromant does its utmost for the manufacturing industry
Sandvik Coromant, founded in 1942, is more than a leader in the field of metal cutting. It is a pioneer leading the manufacturing industry to keep getting better. From product releases and recognized sustainability goals to a completely new look; 2023 has been significant for the organization. Here Helen Blomqvist, President of Sandvik Coromant, summarizes this year's highlights.
As the industry evaluates, so do the tools and digital solutions used by the manufacturing industry. As a result, every March and October, Sandvik Coromant introduces exclusive new tools or upgrades to existing tools to ensure our customers have the best possible solutions that are up-to-date with their changing requirements.
The latest launch in October 2023 included the introduction of the updated CoroCut® 1-2, now known as CoroCut® 2, for improved performance in all cutoff and groove cutting operations. Versatile, cost-effective and safe machining remain at the core of CoroCut 2, but now the tool also benefits from improved stability, greater flexibility and significant productivity gains.
In addition, we introduced a new milling concept, CoroMill® MR80, designed for challenging roughing operations in a wide range of surface milling and profile milling applications in steel and stainless steel. The October launch also introduced a new species in our new generation series for steel turning - the GC4405 species, as well as the CoroDrill® 860 with SD geometry, optimized for drilling in nickel-based HRSA materials, with a standard drilling depth capacity of up to 8×D.
Over the past eight decades, our brand has grown significantly, from our founding as a small carbide division of Sandvik, to a leading supplier of tools for the metalworking industry. In line with this transformation, our brand has embraced different colors and styles over the years. In September 2023, it was time to evolve once again when we unveiled our new brand image.
In 2020, it was, Make the Shift our mission statement, which concretized our commitment to become a more meaningful, responsible and sustainable company. But now, in the company's new transformation, Sandvik Coromant has endorsed a new mission statement of Manufacturing Wellness - our promise to invest in a better future. More specifically, it accentuates the next step in the company's ambitions to support the shift to more meaningful, technology-driven manufacturing that is ready for the future.
Manufacturing Wellness now runs like a thread through everything we do at Sandvik Coromant, from product development to the way we speak to our customers; we are committed to cultivating an environment of healthy manufacturing habits and supporting the development of sustainable business practices. At the same time, we reshaped our brand image with a new logo, new colors and other visual markers being rolled out across the Sandvik Coromant brand, our manufacturing units and our Sandvik Coromant Centers.
The manufacturing sector accounts for one-fifth of global CO2 emissions.Since our founding, Sandvik Coromant has been committed to reducing this figure through sustainable business practices, which we have divided into four areas.
This includes evaluating how to reduce climate impact, increase resource efficiency, using innovation and knowledge to set a new standard for sustainability in our industry, and working together to achieve our goals.
In September 2023, our net-zero goal was validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The initiative defines and promotes best practice in emission reduction and net-zero targets in line with climate science.
In line with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), our sustainability goals are set in line with the SBTi criteria and are committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and practicing responsible manufacturing.
We have cut our Scope one and two CO2 emissions in half compared to 2019 levels. But we know there is much more we can do. SBTi's validation means we have science behind us to drive our commitment to make changes and move forward.
2023 has been full of positive steps that have led to real changes in putting together a better manufacturing space that acts responsibly and sustainably. Our commitment to innovate and update through regular product introductions and investment in climate science is helping us to really pave the way. And with a new mission and brand image, the future looks extremely hopeful.
