Optimizing is easy with the right machines
The ergonomics, user-friendliness and long-term precision of the Weiler E30 provide the basis for fast and error-free results.

Optimization is easy with the right machines

"Solid, reliable machines can take a lot of work off your hands," says Brice Buhlmann, manager of family-owned Buhlmann, which has been in the market for more than 90 years. This is more important than ever in the current zeitgeist, where there is an acute shortage of machine operators/CNC programmers.

It is very important for the metal working and processing industry to purchase solid, reliable machines. They ease the work of operators and lead to optimization. Buhlmann gives some examples of machines that the company represents and will also show during the Machineering trade fair.

The Envision One, also in Buhlmann's portfolio, features patented technology CDLM (continuous digital light manufacturing) for continuous printing.

"A machine that we would like to bring extra attention to our target group is the Weiler E30 turning machine. Its ergonomics, user-friendliness and long-term precision are the basis for fast and error-free results. The machine is very user-friendly due to its graphical user interface. For example, it is possible to call up a number of cycles stored in the control system at the touch of a button. These can then be executed individually or as part of an automated sequence. The advantages for the user are shorter programming times and highly efficient production of single pieces or small series."

A second machine Buhlmann mentions is Hanwha's XD10 cleavage machine. "This has a very good value for money and is often used for large numbers of small parts. The presence of multiple axes makes it easy to produce large quantities with the necessary speed and accuracy."

Controls

These are just two machines from Buhlmann's extensive portfolio. "Purchasing decent machines is important, but companies can also optimize with the right controls. For example, we have partnered with the CAD/CAM company Solid Cam. They offer with their software the possibility to reduce the time operators have to spend at their machine. The movements of the tools in the machine are pre-programmed in the software on a computer, rather than on the machine itself. This offers several advantages. A first is optimization in terms of machining time. The machine can turn or mill while the operator can already prepare the next operation. This leads to better production time. In addition, an operator can more easily operate multiple machines. This is an important point in the current zeitgeist, where there is a great shortage of machine operators/CNC programmers."

Additive Manufacturing

Additive Manufacturing can also lead to optimization, Buhlmann says. "Additive Manufacturing is an important segment in our portfolio. Among other things, we represent Desktop Metal's 3D printers. These are printers of metal objects in small to medium series. They also offer printers that can print with hard and soft plastics, ceramic material, wood and sand. Printing objects in sand, for example, is useful for foundries to produce molds."

Series production

The biggest selling point of Desktop Metal's machine is its ability to print 3D objects in series. "This is extremely important for the market. 3D printed objects bring enormous design freedom that can benefit companies if they can produce the objects in series." Buhlmann gives an example: "A customer wants to build and sell a machine. In order to improve the efficiency or speed of the machine, he has to change the design of a part, making its production very complex if you were to produce it with a traditional existing technology. However, with the 3D printer, this particular design can be mass produced without difficulty. This allows him to use the part in his machines without any problems and leaves the competition far behind. 3D printing is a beautiful technology that is far from being finished."
