Handheld systems and robots provide far-reaching automation

'Everything from one hand' - this slogan also gave Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG all the power at TechniShow. At booth B010 in hall 12, the machine builder showed two automation systems in a complete solution: robot system RS 1 is coupled to a C 32 machining center, the HS flex heavy for workpiece handling to a C 42.

At TechniShow, the HS flex heavy for workpiece handling was coupled with a C 42.

Ergonomic handling system

The HS flex heavy is based on different components delivered and adjusted as a complete unit. Only the workpiece storage modules are assembled and adjusted on site. This results in a short installation time, allowing the user to get to work quickly.

Very safe

The system is very ergonomic and safe. For example, the two hinged doors prevent operators from entering the machine's work area during a workpiece changeover. When the operation is in progress, they can still access the work area, but the handling system is closed. With the rotating, lifting and linear axes of the handling unit, workpieces up to 1,200 kg, including pallets up to 800 x 630 mm, can be accurately moved between loading station, storage modules and working space of the machining center. To avoid errors, the maximum workpiece height is already requested at the loading station, so that workpieces with oversized dimensions cannot be fed in.

RS 1 is compatible with several Hermle machining centers: C 12, C 22, C 32, C 42, C 250 and C 400. In this application, the robot operates two machines.

Storage modules

Special attention has also been paid to the development of the storage modules, which are designed as racks. One module is installed as standard; the second is optional. Up to three shelves with a total of 9 locations for pallets per module can be used. This means that with two modules, up to 18 pallet locations are available. A specially developed storage generator controls both the allowable weight and dimensions.

Compact robotic cell

RS 1, the robotic cell for pallet and workpiece automation, is distinguished by maximum flexibility and productivity. Its construction as a rack warehouse ensures extremely long autonomous operation. The change of grippers and fixtures is fully automatic. The NC-controlled clamps and grippers allow fully automatic workpiece changeover. Due to their very large range, they adapt to the workpiece parts, making manual intervention virtually unnecessary. Pallets and workpieces can also be loaded while the machine is machining other pieces. This makes the RS 1 the perfect automation solution for many companies.

Its construction as a rack magazine ensures extremely long autonomous operation at RS 1.

Very versatile

There is more, however, as RS 1 is extremely versatile. After all, the system can be linked to one or two machines. Expansion from one to two machining centers can also be done at a later stage. An expansion with a third rack, a polishing system, a measuring machine or an AGV (automated guided vehicle) is also possible. With an area of only 12 m2, the RS 1 robotic system always provides free access to the work areas of the machining centers, regardless of whether one or two are linked. It is compatible with various Hermle machining centers: C 12, C 22, C 250, C 32, C 400 or C 42. Even two different types of machines can be linked to one RS 1. With one linked machining center, automation is controlled with the HERMLE Automation Control System (HACS) or the SOFLEX production control system, with two machines it is always done with SOFLEX.

Everything at a glance

The Hermle Automation Control System is the proven control software from the German specialist in machining centers and automation solutions. Intuitive operation and a clear structure help prevent errors. Users see all relevant data at a glance: system overview, work plans, order of planned jobs, tool overview... All newly set workpieces are automatically added to the planning. Priorities can also be changed at any time. And all this via drag-and-drop with optimal visualization.
