Ordering machine parts in no time without errors

Hyler® is a young and dynamic company specializing in the design and production of hemp, flax and miscanthus harvesting machines. For the laser-cut metal sheets, tubes and edge parts of the machines, the company cooperates with 247TailorSteel, where metalworking - from order to delivery - is highly automated. That approach saves time while minimizing error margins.

Hyler®, based in Oostrozebeke, specializes in producing harvesting machines for sustainable crops such as hemp and flax, driven by a passion for fiber. They build the machines of tomorrow. The machines are built from market demand. That demand is transformed into young and purposeful innovative machines that move with the times and stand out from their current competitors. 

Hemp and flax are very sustainable crops, which comply with the European Green Deal. For example, hemp does not need sprays and absorbs 8-15 tons of CO2, making it an interesting crop. "We invest a lot of energy and time in the design, development and construction of these machines; ultimately with the goal of achieving series production," says CEO Niels Baert.

Online software Sophia®

For metal machine parts, Hyler® often uses the services of 247TailorSteel, which supplies custom laser-cut sheet and tube material. Baert: "To serve customers quickly, we use the online software Sophia®, which stands for Sophisticated Intelligent Analyser. It works with artificial intelligence, from which production and logistics are controlled. For example, Sophia® quickly generates laser-cut steel plates, tubes and edge parts without human support. So we can order parts at any time of the day via this tool. As a result, it saves us a lot of time. In addition, there is less room for error." 

Time savings and fewer errors

Baert explains further: "With suppliers who handle the process from order to delivery more in the traditional way, paper quotations are still often used and human contact is necessary. The process from request, quotation to actual order confirmation takes several days and sometimes even weeks. There is also a greater chance of making mistakes - making mistakes is human. Work is also not always done according to our margin of tolerance."

Automated

At 247TailorSteel the process is automated. "All the parts we order for our machines are designed by us, but we do this according to the design guidelines of 247TailorSteel, giving us the guarantee that the parts can be manufactured by them without problems and efficiently. In a few minutes, we receive a complete quotation through Sophia® itself, which we can then check and compare. The program also indicates if something cannot be folded according to their machines, so we can make any adjustments before we even place the order. That's another handy tool."

Not impersonal

The portal provides insight into costs during the design phase, while the user can adjust material types or thicknesses as well as design or connection methods in the interim. Yet the collaboration is not impersonal, Baert argues. 

"Our machines have high complexity, often with more than 15,000 pieces. Some parts are so complex that we sometimes want to take a moment to discuss what alternative, equivalent solutions are also possible, in addition to our chosen option. We therefore also have a regular contact within 247TailorSteel whom we can always turn to. He also keeps us informed of new developments within their company that may be of interest to our applications. They evolve with us to offer the most comprehensive package possible." ■
