Sheet metal processing specialist inaugurates state-of-the-art production site

After months of preparation, 247TailorSteel recently inaugurated its new production facility in Hooglede (Roeselare). The first laser cutting machines, tube lasers and press brakes were started up and the new employees were fully inducted. The production process is characterized by extensive automation, robotization and digitalization. Thanks to this facility, the sheet metal working specialist will be able to supply customers in Belgium and northern France even faster. Using the online software Sophia®, customers can place orders 24/7, receive a quotation in one minute, and have their product delivered within 48 hours.

247TailorSteel has been in the sheet metal processing business for over fifteen years, providing laser-cut sheet and tube material to order. Started in 2007 with two 5-kW laser cutting machines, today it produces 24 hours a day, seven days a week with laser cutting machines, tube lasers, press brakes and edge rounding systems. The company has sites in Oyten (DE), Hilden (DE), Langenau (DE), Varsseveld (NL), Oud Gastel (NL) and Hooglede (BE), and there are plans for additional production sites in Germany and Austria. 

"In April of this year we opened our largest plant in Oud Gastel, with an area of 40,000 m², and in early October the site in Hooglede was put into operation. Just over a year before that, the first shovel was put into the ground there. That was the starting shot for the realization of a very tall industrial building, including a parking garage, with a surface area of 17,000 m² on a plot of more than 30,000 m² on Roger Deceuninckstraat. So today, our machine park grows to more than sixty laser cutting machines, more than fifty press brakes and more than twenty tube lasers," says CEO Carl Berlo. 

"At our Belgian facility, we initially installed four laser cutting machines, four bending machines, three tube lasers and two machines for edge finishing. But we want to gradually expand that number to more than twenty lasers and twelve bending benches. Other goal is to eventually create 250 new workstations here. We aim to be close to our customers and guarantee them short delivery times. From Hooglede, we will be able to deliver the products of customers in Belgium and northern France barely 48 hours after the order is placed."

Great attention is also paid to working conditions, with modern machinery, clean and bright halls, and even trees between the machines.

Automated production process, pleasant workplaces

At 247TailorSteel careful consideration was given in advance to what the ideal factory should look like for them. High efficiency and optimal logistics were crucial. In addition to state-of-the-art machinery, far-reaching automation of business processes was chosen. For example, AGVs are used to transport the various steel sheets from the warehouse to the support arm of the laser cutting machines. The dimensions are generated directly from the order data, making everything fast, flexible and extremely efficient. In the production process, energy consumption is significantly lower than in other comparable laser cutting plants, and the amount of material waste is kept to a minimum. 

"We also pay a lot of attention to working conditions for our staff. We know that people like working with modern machines, but today they attach equal importance to a cool and healthy working environment. A dark shop floor with lots of dust scares them off, but a bright and clean space appeals," the CEO continues. "The machines in the production hall generate heat, but thanks to our adiabatic cooling we can still keep the temperature at 20 to 21°C, ideal for working. With our Academy, we also invest continuously in training and further education. Our employees are happy, and you notice that in productivity and minimal absenteeism. Ultimately, they are also our best ambassadors. Their word of mouth generates new job applications."

Digitization

At 247TailorSteel they want to be able to respond quickly and flexibly to any market demand. Digitization of business processes helps with this. "Using our updated online software Sophia® (Sophisticated Intelligent Analyser), customers can receive a quotation 24 hours a day and seven days a week in one minute, place their order and have the product delivered within 48 hours," Carl Berlo concludes. "This tool works with artificial intelligence, from which production and logistics are controlled. Thus laser-cut metal sheets, tubes and edge parts are generated in no time, all without human intervention."
