Power skiving solution 2-3 times faster than gear planing

Sandvik Coromant enables production with a single setup on a machining center

A new power skiving solution consisting of CoroMill® 178 and CoroMill 180 milling from Sandvik Coromant is being released, to help automotive manufacturers produce gear and keyway components in one setup on a multi-task machine or machining center. Skiving processes are many times faster than planing and more flexible than broaching, rapidly becoming an efficient and flexible alternative for gear and keyway production.

Sandvik Coromant's power skiving solution consists of solid carbide (shank and arbor) and insert milling cutters. CoroMill 178S (solid carbide) is used for applications requiring high volume, high speed machining with long tool life, while CoroMill 178H (powder metallurgy HSS) is intended for general use at corners or small diameters. These tools offer the highest tooling accuracy with respect to concentricity and toothing compared to insert tools, providing a better reconditioning profile of the gear and key. Reconditioning can typically be done up to 10 times, depending on the quality of the tool.

CoroMill 180 insert mills are designed for high-volume, pre-machining on a wide range of gears (module 2-9). Among its many notable features is a positive chip angle for light cutting and the option of dry machining, which saves on coolant costs and helps protect the environment.

"The power skiving milling program can offer both high production volume and optimized finishing profile," said Harish Maniyoor, Global Product Manager, Industry Segment Automotive at Sandvik Coromant. "Combined with the ability to machine with one setup, the tools improve quality and save time and costs. The fact is that cycle time reductions of approximately 50% can be expected compared to gear planing, significantly reducing the cost per component. It is also worth mentioning that skiving is more flexible than gear milling for producing new, compact transmissions for the automotive industry."

All tools are constructed as custom solutions to meet exact customer needs. With the right design, the process at production levels will prove up to 15 times faster than planing and more flexible than broaching with better quality. The development also offers greater process flexibility for end customers, moving production to in-house machining centers rather than on dedicated machine tools at suppliers. In addition, process reliability will increase, with fewer unplanned stops.

Manufacturers in the automotive industry will benefit the most, as the tools support new developments in hybrid cars, as well as electric mobility for cars, trucks, tractors and excavators. Typical applications include internal and external gears and keyways - and cylindrical helical and helical gears - for automotive transmissions, as well as a range of other gears, clutch components, keyways, shafts, synchronizing rings and CV joints.
