Cutting tool and tool system specialist Sandvik Coromant has introduced a new clamping sleeve for its CoroChuck® 930 high accuracy hydraulic collet chuck. Designed for Weldon shafts, the new chuck features a mechanically locking coupling to prevent tool pullout or movement when producing costly components and/or machining with challenging cutting data.
"Being 100% assured that pullout at Weldon shafts does not occur when producing high value-added components, such as aerospace frame and engine components, is essential in the highly competitive manufacturing sector," says Mats Backman
Global Product Manager at Sandvik Coromant. "Production engineers and managers are constantly under pressure to minimize rejects and maximize profitability. These thoughts formed the background in the development of the new collet."
The mechanically locking coupling functions between the collet and holder, and between the collet and the shank. Confidence that no pullout can occur when both the collet and holder are locked increases productivity in heavy-duty applications. Other benefits include easy assembly in CoroChuck 930 holders, both slim and HD versions, while high concentricity is assured with cylindrical fixturing of Weldon shafts. In addition, coolant supply through the collet provides safe and reliable coolant supply to the tool.
Ultimately, this new solution will benefit any shop looking for trouble-free machining in heavy-duty applications. No pullout or tool movement protects against the potentially significant cost of re-machining or rejecting an expensive component. Extraction changes the tool's gauge calibration length during machining, leading to the creation of features with incorrect dimensions or collision marks.
To give an example of the possible gains to be made, in a practical case at a customer's site, the CoroChuck 930 (with the new collet) was used for a milling operation on a CNC turning-milling machine. The goal was to produce a double screw from 42CrMo4 alloy steel. At cutting data of 3220 rpm spindle speed, 1500 mm/min (590 in/min) feed rate, 10 mm (0.394 in.) axial depth of cut (nominal), and 20 mm (0.787 in.) radial depth of cut, the mechanical locking clutch generated a stable process with no pull-out. In addition, productivity increased due to longer tool life.
Clamping sleeves are available for an assortment of common Weldon shaft sizes. Accessories include mounting tools and anchor screws.
