Light-cutting geometries for radius change plates expand the range of applications for CoroMill 331 users

Automotive, aerospace and oil and gas sectors can benefit

New insert geometries expand the list of suitable applications for the versatile CoroMill® 331 cutter from Sandvik Coromant. The most recent additions to the portfolio are the availability of two new light-cutting peripheral cutter geometries for radius change plates suitable for applications in the automotive and aerospace sectors.

Specially introduced for CoroMill 331 is the M30 geometry, which is designed to optimize groove milling in steel and cast iron automotive components. Defined by its light cutting action, the M30 geometry is available for size 11 change plates and offers radius dimensions from 1.5 to 3.0 mm (0.059 to 0.118 in). This heavy-duty geometry is particularly beneficial when machine shops want to improve security in weak set-ups or long projection length applications, where it offers reliability and improved competitiveness. Available grades include GC1130, GC1020, GC3040 and the newest GC4330 grade for milling steel.

In addition, the L50 geometry has been introduced, which is aimed at machining aerospace components, as well as for workpieces in the oil and gas sector. Offered in size 11 inserts with radius dimensions from 3.0 mm to 6.3 mm (0.118 to 0.248 in), light cutting is also the main feature of the robust and sharp L50 geometry, making it suitable for materials such as stainless steels, nickel-based superalloys and titanium. Optimized for use in good operating conditions and tough application areas, the GC1040, GC2040 and S30T are the available carbide grade options.

"Groove milling is one of the most common application areas within insert milling, and the new geometries have been developed specifically in response to demand from machine shops looking to improve process reliability, quality and costs," says Jenny Häll Jansson, global product manager milling, Sandvik Coromant.

Note that in addition to the M30 and L50, size 8, 11 and 14 change plates with a 4.0 mm (0.157 in) radius are made available as standard in the WM geometry. Again intended to improve milling of automotive components, the type options include GC1130, GC1020, GC3040 and GC4330.

But far from just groove milling, CoroMill 331 is a universal concept that can provide flexible, high-precision machining in numerous face milling, angle milling and side and face milling operations in all sectors of industry. A large range covers an extensive choice of diameters, widths, insert geometries, corner radii and types.
