Latest boring tools offer up to four operations in a single tool

CoroBore BC from Sandvik Coromant is easier to order and cheaper than specially designed tools

Cutting tool and tool system specialist Sandvik Coromant introduces its CoroBore® BC (Boring Combination) program of solutions, which consists of Tailor Made tools for high volume applications. By using CoroBore BC it is possible to perform various machining operations, such as semi-finishing and chamfering with a single tool. Manufacturers that will benefit include those working for the automotive, general engineering and construction machinery sectors.

CoroBore BC provides a quick and easy alternative when standard tools do not meet specific requirements, while the cost and delivery time of a specifically designed solution are a hurdle. The process is quick because Sandvik Coromant staff use an online program that automatically creates the tool and provides pricing and delivery information.

"The productivity benefits offered by CoroBore BC tools are based on eliminating unnecessary tool changes and reducing cycle times," said Jenny Nilsson, Global Product Manager, Sandvik Coromant. "One of the many strengths of this new solution is the ability to provide these benefits much faster, thanks to the automated design and quoting process. The Sandvik Coromant representative simply goes through the required operations and parameters with the customer and enters the parameters via a Web-based design interface. Once this is completed, the system immediately produces the tool design and quotation."

Thanks to the various CoroBore BC options offered, a wide range of stepped boring applications can be performed. Customers can choose up to four operations in a single tool (up to two cutting edges per operation). The cutting diameter range is from 20 to 200 mm (0.787 to 7.874 inches), while tool length can be as long as 400 mm (15.75 inches), depending on clutch size. Coupling options include Coromant Capto®, HSK form A and ISO 9766, as well as ISO/Mas-BT/Cat-V taper. The extensive range of coupling models and sizes supported typically allows direct integration with the machine coupling, eliminating the need for a separate base holder.

CoroBore BC change plate carrier solutions utilize CoroBore cassettes. Compared to fixed insert seats, this configuration allows easy and efficient insert changes. Because they are standard stock items, both the change plate and change plate carrier can easily be replaced at short notice.

The cassettes are available in three configurations: radially and axially adjustable, axially adjustable only, and non-adjustable. All cassette options are equipped with high-precision coolant feed suitable for coolant pressures up to 80 bar (1160 PSI), a unique advantage in custom multi-stage boring tools.

In addition to standard ISO inserts, CoroBore BC boring tools can be equipped with the proprietary CoroBore 111 inserts, which come in optimized type options for medium and rough boring. All in all, the Sandvik Coromant insert program offers productive geometries and types for all types of materials and boring operations.

Ultimately, the unique advantages of CoroBore BC ultimately offer production workshops an opportunity to obtain the tool with a shorter lead time compared to a dedicated tool - and at a much more attractive price.
