Narrow hydraulic-expansion tool holder with highly efficient cooling

Customers are becoming increasingly demanding. The demand for higher accuracies is no stranger to this. Three years ago, SCHUNK's slim hydraulic expansion toolholder TENDO Slim 4ax caused a stir in the market for precision toolholders. The precision arrangement combines the external geometry of crimp fasteners according to DIN 69882-8 with the impressive qualities of SCHUNK's hydraulic-expansion toolholder technology. SCHUNK now additionally markets a variant with cool-flow technology, which offers highly efficient cooling through the toolholder. Result? Higher surface quality and less rework and tooling costs.

Especially for machining steel, aluminum but also plastics, the TENDO Slim 4ax cool-flow technology offers several advantages. Indeed, at the SCHUNK Tec-Center the cool-flow or water jet is always optimally adapted to the metal cutting process independent of the unclamped length. Unlike in crimp assemblies, the jet does not rebound at the tool shaft during long clamping, but hits the entire jet across the tool shaft to the cutting edge. This is an advantage for cooling the cutting edge, chips are better dissipated and the overall process becomes more efficient. Pilot applications in toolmaking show that the vibration-damping assembly with cool-flow technology pays off especially in pre-grinding, roughing and finishing with excellent surface quality. In addition, finishing operations are reduced and tooling costs decrease.

The geometry of the TENDO Slim 4ax perfectly matches the geometry of the shrink tool holders. Therefore, existing fasteners can be replaced without programming.

Plug-and-Work

Unlike shrink tool holders, the TENDO Slim 4ax, with its permanently precise runout accuracy of < 0.003 mm at an unclamped length of 2.5 x D and a balancing degree of G 2.5 at 25,000 rpm, fits seamlessly into SCHUNK's proven program of hydraulic expansion technology. Even tight form and position tolerances can be accurately respected. Like all SCHUNK TENDO hydraulic-expansion tool holders, the TENDO Slim 4ax also convinces with its perfect damping of vibrations and quick tool changes using an Allen wrench. Investments in expensive peripheral equipment are not necessary. Because the precision arrangement of conventional shrink tool holders can be easily replaced with Plug-and-Work, without having to reprogram the machine, their advantages can be tested immediately or used permanently. The slim arrangement with cool-flow technology is available in 90 mm and 120 mm lengths for interfaces HSK-A63 between ø 6 mm and ø 32 mm. The interfaces for SK 40 with ø 6 mm to ø 32 mm will be available in mid-2020. Further interfaces such as BT 40 and length variants with 160 mm are planned.
