KMWE Toolmanagers and KGS Tools introduce a new concept with three packages for re-sharpening machining tools: ToolGrind Budget, ToolGrind Standard and ToolGrind Premium. With these, the tooling specialists can serve every machinist: both the customer who wants to have his tools regrinded at the lowest possible price, as well as the customer who places the highest demands on grinding and everything in between.
Sten van Poppel, online marketer at KMWE Toolmanagers, calls re-sharpening "a dusty market. "We too have actually been doing exactly the same thing for about 65 years: picking up tools, re-sharpening them and bringing them back. It's time to do it differently, to really add value to the grinding product. To this end, we are now launching a revolutionary concept."
KMWE Toolmanagers can go down this new path because last year it acquired industry peer KGS Tools in Tilburg. This created the largest resharpener of cutting tools and producer of special tools for the machining metal, wood and plastics industries in the Benelux. This has created many economies of scale and more possibilities, which means that the image of regrinding can now be polished considerably.
This is done by creating three packages to serve all market segments. The first package is ToolGrind Budget. This targets the real price-fighters among machinists, who really just want to be able to reuse their tools, and that should cost as little as possible. "This is the group we serve with Budget," says Van Poppel. "We sharpen their tools at lower prices than people are used to from us, but certainly no worse than before. Only in doing so, we determine the sharpening policy. Budget customers cannot have specific requirements for the grinding work. Also, only one coating is available for milling and one coating for drilling."
ToolGrind Standard already goes a lot further. Within this package, cutters are already ground to fixed dimensions. As standard, this is done in 0.3 mm increments that are ground off the diameter. The advantage is that the customer always knows the exact diameter of the re-sharpened milling cutter. He can then take this into account in the programming of his machine. The customer also has the choice of several coatings. And he has the option of having PowerGrind performed. This is a post-treatment technique specially developed by KMWE Toolmanagers that smoothes the tool, and where necessary applies a cutting edge rounding, which makes the tool cut more quietly and lasts longer.
The third package is ToolGrind Premium. Here the customer can set a lot of individual requirements for regrinding. He can determine for each tool how much to remove. In addition, KMWE Toolmanagers can guarantee the original geometry of the tool. "We are able to regrind a cutter in the same way as the manufacturer," says Van Poppel. "We receive the tool, measure the macro and micro geometry and grind it accurately." The advantage KMWE Toolmanagers offers over re-sharpening at the manufacturer is time savings. "Our customer does not have to wait 4 to 8 weeks. We have a delivery time of 10 working days," says Van Poppel. "This is how we guarantee our client's productivity."
Another advantage of Premium is that the packaging in which the tools are delivered can be individualized. For example, the customer can specify specific item numbers or certain information about the tool. The engraving on the tool itself can also be individualized.
With this renewed service KMWE Toolmanagers wants to compete with the grinding services of tool manufacturers and stay ahead in the market. In developing the new grinding concepts, the Eindhoven-based tooling specialist conducted thorough research and listened carefully to customers. "Customers have very different requirements," Van Poppel knows. "One wants the lowest possible price, the other demands that the grinding work be recorded in a measurement report on which he can set his machine software. We can serve both groups optimally, with each side naturally having the freedom to choose different packages. He can have his one tool sharpened Budget, another Standard and yet another Premium."
