Efficient boring of stainless materials

Paul Horn GmbH is expanding the Supermini system with a new variant specifically for drilling out stainless steel. The optimized cutting edge geometry combined with the IG35 layer ensures high productivity and process reliability. With a coating thickness of only 0.003 mm and a maximum operating temperature of about 1,100 degrees Celsius, the tools achieve on average twice the service life of conventional coatings. Coating of the tools is done in-house at Horn in its own HiPIMS coating systems. In addition to the high cutting performance, this enables rapid delivery of the tools.

The optimized cutting edge geometry combined with the IG35 coating ensures high productivity and process reliability.

Boring, profile turning, internal grooving, threading, chamfering, axial grooving, drilling and groove slotting. The Supermini tool system can be customized and used for numerous machining operations. The solid carbide insert is used in machining bores with diameters ranging from 0.2 mm to about 10 mm. Horn developed the blank of the tool as a drop shape. This shape enables precise and large contact surfaces in the toolholder, resulting in greater rigidity of the overall system. In addition, the droplet shape prevents the cutting insert from twisting, resulting in accurate positioning of the tool tip height at all times. For long tool protrusions, it reduces deflection and minimizes vibration during the turning process. Depending on the application and the diameter to be machined, Horn offers the insert in three different sizes (types 105, 109 and 110) and different types of blanks. All variants allow internal coolant to be fed directly to the effective zone. Horn's tool portfolio includes about 2,500 different standard variants of the Supermini. In addition, Horn has solved users' tasks with numerous special solutions.
