3D printing: from prototyping to functional printing

In recent decades, 3D printing has dramatically changed the way we create and produce objects. This technology allows manufacturers to build three-dimensional objects layer by layer, directly from digital designs. What began as an innovation in laboratories has evolved into a powerful tool with a wide range of applications in various industries.

Dave Vanhove, business manager 3iD Printing: "Ten years ago I bought my first 3D printer. Because I thought this was going to take off in earnest. In the beginning it unfortunately stuck a bit to prototyping. It took off, but we did have to wait until corona paralyzed the world and then a boat thwarted in the Suez Canal. Because at that point, all kinds of machine parts no longer arrived at their respective places, or at least much too late, and alternatives had to be sought..."

Soon to be more sustainable?

"The future of 3D printing looks promising," says Vanhove. "Hopefully we can soon expect more environmentally friendly materials and more sustainable production processes. Because the sustainability now is not in the materials used, but rather in the customization. Where previously companies had to stockpile parts that were sometimes never used, now a specific piece is ordered, and delivered a few days later. In a world where customization, speed and efficiency are increasingly important, 3D printing has proven to be a valuable tool. It is a revolution that has only just begun and will undoubtedly continue to surprise us with new possibilities and applications. In any case, I am happy that the flight forward did not stop after the past woes. There is a clear future for 3D printing!"
