Unburring without worry

Deburring without worry

Working reliably automatically is only possible if the pieces are delivered to the machine in perfect condition. For Desart Industries (part of Buyse Metal Works Group) in Lier, Rösler's deburring technology is indispensable for this. Last summer, the drum that has reliably performed its duties for more than thirty years was replaced by a new one. With the addition of a centrifuge, the company is also taking steps towards more sustainable water management.

However, the centrifuge, which stands next to the deburring drum, is brand new.

Since ten years, the Buyse Metal Works Group unites two suppliers of repute: Desart Industries from Lier and Buyse Decolletage from Aalter. "A story of synergy, because both have complementary machinery," says technical coordinator Steven Geerts. "In Aalter, the focus is on decolletage. Especially large series and smaller diameters produced in a fully automated way. At Desart in Lier, we mainly process the larger, more complex pieces, often in difficult materials and with close tolerances."

At Desart, this happens today with just under fifty employees, who finish mechanical parts to perfection for big names in the Belgian manufacturing industry. They all come knocking at the door in Lier. The secret of its success? "Parts are finished here from A to Z under one roof. From sawing and deburring to arriving at one of the forty highly automated turning and milling centers. If post-treatment is required, reliable suppliers are used here. By controlling the entire process ourselves, we can achieve the close tolerances our customers demand. Through this one-stop shop, we try to unburden our customer in the maximum way possible."

More than thirty years of faithful service

Everything must be accurate to perfection after each stage of production. For this reason, Desart has its own deburring drum. Geerts: "Especially for pieces that leave for fully automated CNC machines after cutting or sawing to size, the dimensions must be perfectly correct. The slightest burr can cause the pieces to be incorrectly positioned for the robotic gripper, which can lead to imperfections or even damage to the tools."

Since the 1980s, Desart has relied on Rösler technology for this purpose. After more than thirty years of faithful service, however, a replacement of the current installation was imminent. "Some damage began to show up at the weld seam after all these years. Finding spare parts was also becoming increasingly difficult. So to ensure continuity, we wanted to invest in a new installation."

Everything must be accurate to perfection after each stage of production. For this reason, Desart has its own deburring drum.

Obviously Rösler again

The choice of supplier was clear at the start of this process. "The fact that we didn't go into the market to compare different manufacturers of surface treatment equipment actually says a lot. Confidence was high, no matter how much we finished this machine, we never had any problems with it. We were even able to just keep the dryer that is the same age," says Geerts.

The model was not compromised either. "Only one size larger, in function of the majority of the pieces we work with it. But you do feel the leap in time we are making with it. The machine is a lot more sophisticated. Everything is now PLC-controlled. The operator chooses the desired program according to the deburring time the pieces need, and the drum goes to work automatically."

Reusing water

What is brand new, however, is the centrifuge that stands next to the deburring drum. "The water is filtered and cleaned in the centrifuge so that we can reuse it continuously. Important, because sustainability is not just an empty slogan here. We already try to provide our own energy as much as possible.

With this, we can also take steps in the right direction again in terms of water management."

What remains can be disposed of as dry dust. An added advantage for Desart, as a drainage system was not present near the deburring drum. "We do notice that we now have better control over the purity of the water. The problems with odor nuisance that could occur are now completely a thing of the past," Geerts confirms.

The drum became a size larger, according to the bulk of the pieces Desart worked with it.

Always proper support

Geerts also has nothing but praise for Rösler's service. "In itself, little has actually changed in the way we work. Rösler's technology did and always does what it needs to do to guarantee us the finish we need. We did need some adjustment in the start-up phase to correctly follow up on the control of the water in order to guarantee as long a life as possible. But for that we can always count on our permanent representative Vincent Raman. He can always be reached with one phone call," concludes Geerts.
