The drive for innovation and technical perfection is in Horn's DNA. That is why the precision tooling specialist also remains continuously committed to developing new solutions and optimizing existing products. Once again, numerous precision tools and processes will be highlighted at the EMO in September. The boring bar with adjustable damping is one of the developments that will be demonstrated in Hanover. Of course, visitors there can turn to Horn specialists for advice and technical support with all their projects, topics and challenges.
From September 18 to 23, Horn will participate in the EMO in Hannover. Visitors can visit stand A54 in Hall 5, an area of 580 m². In addition to other innovations and extensions of the product range, numerous precision tools will also be demonstrated.
"The focus is on the tools and processes, but as always, we are also ready to welcome visitors with an extensive team of employees. As a specialist in tools, we attach great importance to providing advice and support to the user, both in our daily activities and at trade fairs. After all, we are convinced that the best machining solutions result from close cooperation between our experts and customers," says Markus Horn. "At the EMO, customers and interested parties can come to us with their current projects, topics and challenges. As a manufacturer of precision tools, we need to master not only the cutting edges, but also the entire process, right down to the material. This allows us to correctly answer any question from the market."
So innovating for the sake of innovating is not an issue at Horn. The specialists listen carefully to what customers need and respond accordingly with new products or the further development of existing offerings. For example, long tool lengths pose a challenge when drilling internal geometries. After all, that can cause problems due to vibration. In addition to a poorer surface finish, these vibrations also result in significantly shorter tool life. Experienced machinists therefore choose vibration-damping boring bars for unfavorable length-diameter ratios. These allow for low-vibration machining, but during certain machining operations these vibrations can never be completely eliminated.
"Our R&D department has addressed exactly that problem, and so at EMO we are presenting a boring bar that can be adjusted to the vibration amplitudes. The precise adjustment of the damping element in the boring bar enables a vibration-free grooving process. This results in a better surface finish and a significant increase in tool life," explains Markus Horn. "The damper consists of a carbide rod supported by O-rings. Its precise adjustment is done via an adjustment screw on the outside. In the process, the preload of the O-rings is adjusted. In this way, the boring bar can be precisely adjusted to the vibrations encountered in each specific application."
Horn supplies the tools in length-to-diameter ratios of 5x- and 8x-diameter as standard from stock. Larger ratios are available on request as special tools. For groove machining, Horn proposes the double-sided groove system type S224. The BK224 cassette system ensures a stable interface between boring bar and cutting plate. These boring bars are equipped with an internal coolant supply to further increase process reliability.
