Saws fit production like a glove
"This works much better, because at the end it took less time."

Sawing machines fit production like a glove

At Rotterdam-based Maatmetaal, they put quality, safety and efficiency first in everything they do. Not surprisingly, they chose Behringer band saw machines in their sawing department.

At its inception, Maatmetaal functioned purely as a trading house. Over the years, the service provided to customers continued to increase and with it the machinery to perform the necessary operations. "Because that way we were able to relieve the customer more and more. First with cast iron, later after taking over a bronze foundry, also with bronze and brass," explains current owner Daniel Vladar. "What did remain the same all this time was the location, on the ring road of Rotterdam. But the original shack turned into a shed, which in turn turned into a modern production building. "Every time a step up."

The first two Behringers Maatmetaal bought saw brass and bronze. "They were put here and haven't stopped since," said Daniel Vladar.

Quality comes first

Although the Western European manufacturing industry is not having an easy time of it, Vladar still sees plenty of reason for Maatmetaal to exist. "Because it involves heavy weights. That makes it interesting, for the sake of logistics, for companies to choose a local partner." Although you may interpret that local at Maatmetaal as Europe-wide. "In addition, we make a difference with quality. Maatmetaal is a DNV-approved foundry, is the only one in the Netherlands to carry the Lloyds certificate for casting weights up to 2,000 kg and is ISO-certified. And we show that we want to move forward. We invest in our production to design our processes in such a way that they can be safer, more efficient and more sustainable. That's what our customers want to see."

With the investments in Behringer machines, Maatmetaal can continue to deliver flawless products, but just a little safer and just a little more efficiently. Left owner Daniel Vladar and right project manager Benno Dieben.

Opting for standardization

In machinery, Vladar opts for standardization. "Machines and tools must serve the people who work here. They should not be a burden. If every forklift is of the same brand, then it can also be operated in the same way. That promotes safety and efficiency." Continuing that line for the saws, however, was not obvious. "They were all band saws but of all kinds of different brands. Each with their good and bad sides. So where to start?" Vladar finally looked at where he wanted to go, in terms of materials and techniques. "We wanted real automatics and roller conveyors to go with it to achieve that efficient, safe operation we were aiming for."

The most recent addition, the HBE1060 is an all-rounder that can sink its teeth into up to 1,060 mm thick material.

Long reliable working

The brand that best matched that was actually not yet in the workshop. Behringer. "We can't do without our sawing machines. Therefore, they had to be quality machines that work reliably over a long period of time. In addition, we wanted good technical support from the Netherlands. And the fact that we already supply Behringer through our subsidiary in Germany completed the picture." The first machine, an HBE511A arrived in 2022. "When one of the smaller saws had an oil leak, we wanted a replacement as soon as possible. Promatt came to the rescue." A second one, an HBE411A, followed less than six months later. "They were put here and haven't stopped since," Vladar laughs. "They saw bronze and brass. The fact that you can use the same saw blades for both machines just makes life easy."

Fully automated operation makes all the difference

The real litmus test for Behringer and Promatt came this year, when one of the so-called Rotorcutters that Maatmetaal had on hand needed to be replaced. "These are cutting machines that work a bit like a lathe. You clamp the material in a chuck and then an arm with a circular saw cuts rings from it very quickly and enormously dimensionally stable. Features that struck a chord with our operators. The Behringer that took its place, HBE1060, may do it more slowly, but it can work fully automatically." The operator just has to turn it on and can get back to other tasks. This works much better because it has taken less time at the end. And the Behringer does it at least as dimensionally stable."

Tolerances are correct

This all-rounder can sink its teeth into up to 1,060 mm thick material. The entire team is extremely proud of the acquisition. "Even the father of the previous owner came to take a look. He raised big eyes," Vladar says. "It's also very popular with customers. Although the cutting pattern is different from what they were used to, the tolerances are still perfectly correct. With this investment we can continue to deliver flawless products, but just a bit safer, and just a bit more efficient. And that's what counts."
